A 30km open ocean challenge with Strongarm and Dive! Tutukaka - Surf Ski, Waka Ama (OC1), Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP)

What: A 30 km unique open ocean paddle event that starts inside the biggest sea cave in the Southern Hemisphere, heads through a natural rock archway and finishes inside the world renowned Tutukaka Harbour.

Who: Open to Surf Skis (single), Waka Ama (OC1) and Stand Up Paddlers (SUP).

When: Saturday, August 30, 2014.

Where: Tutukaka, Northland, NZ


This is a downwind paddle race with alternative race courses that take in the challenging Tutukaka Coast that, until now, has been paddling's best kept secret.

Race Entry is $140. Your entry fee includes: Ferry ticket, race apparel, race stickers, timed finish, post race meal and the rare opportunity to paddle at one of the world's best marine reserves.

NOTE: There are three race options for this event to allow for weather variations. The Rikoriko 30K Dowwinder is the preferred course and organisers will endeavour to complete this race option. However entry does not guarantee this course option. All other options include open ocean legs.

Entries will be accepted at the race director's discretion and a waiting list will be operated on a first on first off basis.

Possible Race Courses:

Race Course A 'The Rikoriko Downwinder' (wind direction NNE, ENE, E, ESE)
Starting in Rikoriko Cave (the world's biggest seacave situated at the world renowned Poor Knights Islands marine reserve) paddlers will head out of the cave entrance, head in a Easterly direction, through 'Middle Arch' and then turn in a westerly direction and head to Tutukaka Harbour across 24km of open ocean).
Race Course B 'The Whananaki Challenger' (wind direction N, NW, WNW)
Starting inside the lee of Whananaki Headland (20km north of Tutukaka Harbour) paddlers will head north into the prevailing winds for approx 8km before turning and heading south to the finish line inside Tutukaka Harbour
Race Course C 'The Taiharuru Terror' (wind direction E, ESE, SE, S)
Starting inside the lee of Taiharuru Headland (16km south of Tutukaka Harbour) paddlers will head south into the prevailing conditions for 10km before turning and heading to the finish line inside Tutukaka Harbour
Race Course D 'The Ngunguru Native' (wind direction W, WSW)
Starting inside Tutukaka Harbour paddlers will head out of the harbour mouth, turn south and paddle approx 10km to the mouth of the Ngunguru River, cross the bar, paddle up river for approx 6km then turn and head back to the finish line inside Tutukaka Harbour (this course will include some headwind, some crosswind, some tail wind and some flat water paddling)

Note: This race is for experienced open ocean paddlers only. Entries are limited due to the capacity of the craft ferrying the race fleet to the start line. Registration will be vetted and entry finalised at the race organiser's discretion.

Entries are open to single surf ski, OC1 and SUP. (Note: For logistical reasons only ruddered OC1 craft with quick release ama systems will be accepted)
