We are looking forward to an exciting season and preparing for our 32nd Annual Sprint Nationals at Lake Karāpiro in January 2021. Over the past few months, the Waka Ama NZ Board with the support from Sport New Zealand, Hotu Barclay-Kerr, and Rangimarie Parata-Takurua have undergone the process of reviewing where sport is at now and drafting a new Strategic Plan for Waka Ama in Aotearoa. This plan will help guide our sport from 2021 to 2025 and beyond.

At this stage, we are currently working on the premise that our 2021 National Sprint Championships at Lake Karāpiro in January will be going ahead. We know times are uncertain and we are monitoring any changes with regard to COVID-19 moving forward, but we are well into the planning of our major Waka Ama Events for 2021. The executive discussed options in the event of the cancellation. Unfortunately, we feel the opportunity to hold this event again before the end of the year not possible. We will therefore look towards the 2021 Waikato Awa race and hope the COVID is a thing of the past.

Unfortunately in light of the government restrictions due to Covid 19, it has been decided that the 3rd race scheduled in Whanganui on September 5th will be cancelled. Therefore the next race of the Hoe Tonga Paddler Series will be hosted at the Manawatu Boating Club at Foxton Beach on October 17th. This event is still currently being planned and organised and more information regarding this event will come in due course.
