Three generations of the Otumoetai-based Ryder family will race across the Tauranga Harbour in outrigger canoe crews this weekend. Seven-year-old Matthew and his brother Cameron, 9, will be paddling along with their parents, Alex and Becs, and 63-year-old grandmother Shirley in the Omokoroa Dash waka ama event on Sunday.

Great fun out on the water today. Sunny conditions and a king tide were instore for paddlers. The 5km Whanau race was popular with several family teams entered.

Maritime NZ is now actively involved in the Takapuna Beach Cup's, On Water Safety Plan. On Saturday morning, Maritime NZ Officers will be conducting random checks to ensure the Support Boats taking part in the Event, meet the minimum requirements.

The Takapuna Beach Cup is now aligned with Waka Ama New Zealand Race Rule 50.2 regarding age eligibility for long distance open water events.

In 2011 Nga Kaihoe o Aotearoa (Waka Ama New Zealand) initiated 2 new trophies to be awarded annually at the Sprint Nationals. The Trophies were carved by Matahi Whakataka Brightwell who has been instrumental in the re-birth and growth of the sport of Waka Ama in Aotearoa.

Frank Herbert is an old hand at waka ama racing. He commentated on the first Waka Ama Nationals in the 90s and continues to race today, despite the fact he turns 74 this year.
