Events and Operations

Regional sports organisations are responsible for delivering safe, enjoyable, and well-managed events that provide opportunities for paddlers of all ages and abilities. Through effective planning and coordination, regions help create a balanced calendar of events that supports participation and the growth of waka ama.

A key responsibility is coordinating regional events, including Regional W1 Championships, Regional W6 Championships, and Regional Secondary School events. Regions work alongside clubs, volunteers and other key partners to ensure events are delivered to a high standard and provide fair and positive experiences for all participants.

It is recommended that Regions also develop and maintain a regional race calendar. Effective calendar planning helps avoid clashes, distributes workloads across clubs, and provides opportunities for paddlers throughout the season. Collaboration with clubs is essential to ensure events are sustainable and meet the needs of the region.

Event delivery involves managing a range of operational requirements, including safety plans, logistics, registrations, equipment, volunteers, and communications. Clear roles and responsibilities help ensure events run efficiently and that everyone involved understands their contribution to successful delivery.

Regions should also regularly review their events and operations to identify opportunities for improvement. Feedback from paddlers, clubs, volunteers, and officials can help strengthen processes and enhance future events.

Ultimately, well-run events are central to creating positive experiences, building community, and supporting the continued growth and success of waka ama.
