Waka Ama New Zealand Appointed Board Member Applications

Applications for Waka Ama NZ Appointed Board Member have been extended to Friday 15th December

Waka Ama New Zealand are currently seeking applications for one (1) appointed Board Member. Applications close Friday 8th December. 

Nga Kaihoe o Aotearoa, (Waka Ama New Zealand) Inc is the non-profit national sporting organisation for the sport of Waka Ama in New Zealand. The organisation’s current structure has been in place since October 2011 and the last five years have been extremely positive for our sport.

The first five years of our the Waka Ama New Zealand Board has established a sound structure in governance and management that will ensure our organisation can continue to keep up with the growth of our sport and provide our membership and our future membership with opportunities that ensure we achieve our long term vision.

25 Year Vision:

To realise Waka Ama's professional, participatory and financial potential. In the year 2035, future generations will have a sport where:
“Waka Ama is a heavyweight in the Aotearoa/New Zealand sporting psyche and is recognised as a global leader and significant influencer in the sport, nationally and internationally. It is the largest water sport in Aotearoa/New Zealand . The Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi is honoured and intrinsic to the sport... … Waka Ama is a sport in all schools… We’ve won gold at multiple significant global events from IVF World Sprint and Distance Championships to Molokai Hoe… There are record crowds at races in Aotearoa/New Zealand… Our sport is in demand by the media … Aotearoa/New Zealand is leading the way in developing safe and fair race standards across the world… Clubs are thriving… Our National Office is financially self-sufficient, our national officers are salaried staff and our elite paddlers are professionals…Waka Ama is a New Zealand Sport accessible to all New Zealanders.… Waka Ama Aotearoa/New Zealand is used as a model for other NSOs for our systems, technology, event management and structure, which epitomises cultural inclusivity, integrity, excellence & mana.”

As per our constitution, every two years one appointed Waka Ama NZ Board member is required to stand down from the board. In this case Paul Dahl will be standing down. Paul has served on the Board since it commenced at the end of 2011 and has overseen much growth and development in our sport over that time.  Paul has made valuable contribution to the Waka Ama New Zealand Board and we thank him for his service. 

We are seeking Board members who will take an active involvement in the sport’s governance body and in the best interests of its membership as a whole.

The Board is made up of four (4) elected board members and three (3) appointed Board members. We are currently calling for nominations for one (1) elected position.

All Applicants must be honest, reliable, trustworthy and comfortable to ‘walk and talk’ the values of our sport:


We encourage the practice of reciprocity through sharing of ourselves and our resources, nurturing all people and accepting our differences.


Is our sense of belonging, identification and collective strength, not only through kinship but being related to all within the Waka Ama community.


We support and promote the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of all our participants.

We are accountable for our actions. We have respect for each other, our waka and our environment. We stand proud in our integrity and passion.


Potential Board members should understand, from the outset of the application process, the legal obligations of being a member of a Board:

Board members exercise stewardship responsibility on behalf of others (usually as members of an incorporated society or beneficiaries of a charitable trust). The Board is responsible for:

     the achievement of appropriate outcomes;

     acting in the best interests of the organisation as a whole

     the financial security of the organisation; and

     the expression of a moral and social responsibility to the sport and to its members.


Joint liability – all Board directors are equally liable for actions and decisions taken by the Board. Non-attendance at a meeting at which a decision is made doesn’t absolve a director from shared responsibility, accountability or liability.


Applications can be received from any individual. They do not need be a member of a waka ama club.
