2014, Another Great Event
This years event was another resounding success with 21 teams comprising Surf Boats, Surf Canoes and Waka Ama taking to the water to battle the mighty Waikato River from Tuakau Bridge to Maraetai Bay in Port Waikato.
Excellent racing conditions saw fast times with the Bhutty Boys from Hei Matau taking out the Open Mens W6 Waka Ama category in 1:48:00. Kaha Wahinez Aotearoa were first in the Open Womens W6 in 2:13:24.
The Surf Canoes joined the race with Red Beach teams of the Flying Malyons and Flying Herons taking out both the Open Mens and Open Womens Surf Canoe in 2:25:35 and 2:38:05 respectively. A very young team from United North Piha took out second place in the Open Womens Surf Canoe in 2:51:51.
Surf Boat times were also excellent with the Orewa Thunder Open Mens team taking out the race in a record time of 2:16:10, beating last years time from Piha A Crew by over 15 minutes.
The young Sunset crew were not far behind taking second place overall and the U19 Mens title in 2:18:27, improving on their 2013 time by nearly 42 minutes.
The winning Open Womens team were Bethells Barracudas in 2:20:11 with Muriwai Muzzies a close second and U23 Womens winners in 2:21:20
