Results - Heartbeat Waka Ama
Sixty paddlers from local clubs, Horouta waka ama, Turanga Ararau and a Wairoa waka ama club team joined Mareikura Canoe Club for a ‘novice paddlers’ 5kms river race on Sunday
This event was held at the end of a seven week Heartbeat Waka ama module that Mareikura Canoe Club had been running for beginner and novice paddlers. The Club had identified barriers for participation by this group and tailored this module to meet their needs.
The Club recognizes the potential that waka ama has in the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Nationally, Waka ama is often used as a tool, one of the key to whanau participation and involvement in wellbeing initiatives.
The Heartbeat Waka ama programme focused on the promotion of heart health, Smokefree environments and key nutrition promotional messages. Specific Incentive prizes were provided to participants to support future involvement and sustainability in waka ama.
Project planning and the provision of resources from the National Heart Foundation and Tairawhiti District Health supported Mareikura Canoe Club in running both a successful module and race event.
A sunny day and a perfect tide provided for ideal race conditions. In the women’s division, Horouta teams Waka mamas Blue and Waka mamas Red took first placing in 35mns46sec, and second placing in 35mns47sec with just a second separating the two teams. Mareikura women team took third position in 41mns15sec, and Turanga Ararau maidens came fourth in 43mns40sec.
The men’s division was won by Horouta East in 33mns12sec, and Wairoa Mixed Meat came second in 35mns50sec
Although the focus was on novice paddlers, experienced teams also raced to support the event. Mareikura Wahine completed the course in 34mns02sec, Mareikura Intermediate girls in 48mns31sec, Mareikura Junior boys in 30mns52sec, Horouta Junior Boys in 31mns52sec
