BEREAVEMENT: Paretoroa Martin (Nana P)

It is with great sadness that we bear the news of the passing of one of our much loved members, Paretoroa Martin, known to us all as Nana P.

Nana P was a dedicated supporter and volunteer of waka ama. She was a regular face at Secondary School Nationals and the Sprint Nationals at Lake Karapiro. Always dedicated and 100% supportive of rangatahi and the youth in our sport, she will be sadly missed by everyone.

Nana P will be lying at Maketu Marae, Kawhia with her nehu taking place on Thursday 22 August.

On behalf of Nga Tai Whakarongo Waka Ama Club, Te Puku o Te Ika and Nga Kaihoe o Aotearoa, we extend our deepest sympathies to Nana P’s whanau and many friends.

Chris Fox, Waka ama Coordinator, Wellington Tenths Trust/Palmerston North Maori Reserve - Thank you Nana P for all your support at our waka ama events - you will be missed and I enjoyed spending time getting to know you. Thanks for opening your heart and sharing your knowledge with those who will attempt to carry on your legacy.
You certainly have set a high standard Nationals and Secondary's won't be the same without your special treatment. I appreciated your guidance this year at Lake Tikitapu and your humour.

Moana Houkamau - I was packing my bags ready to go to a conference in Tauranga when I got a text from Lara to say our dear nana P had passed away. My first thought were to Winikerei, nana P's heart and soul.
Nana P we will certainly miss your smiling face, and it won't be the same at the nationals, without your LOUD voice over that hailer.
Your mate Helen will certainly miss you as a room mate up at the chateau! Never mind nanny Ope and I can keep her company.
Taku aroha ki te whanau whanui o Nana P, especially our Winikerei.
I hope you keep coming to the nationals Wini, I am sure Nana P would want you to, and your aunties and uncles in the tower, registration tent, loading bay and starting line would miss you if you didn't come back. Kia kaha.
