George Thomas para canoe athlete wins bronze at sprint world champs
Experienced international Va'a paddler, George Thomas has secured a bronze medal in the 200m V1 para canoe event at his first ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships.
Trying conditions on the first day saw his heat rescheduled to day two where George won his first race convincingly (17 seconds ahead of the second place getter). Some controversy over the suitability of the event supplied racing V1s was disappointing with the gold and silver medal winners from Tahiti and Germany respectively, racing in superior boats to George.
The Women's K2 pair Lisa Carrington and Teanelle Hatton were the other in form boat for New Zealand yesterday racing well in their heat and semi final to become the first New Zealand women's boat to ever qualify for an A final at a World Championships.
Full competition results can be found on the event website with further updates available on the International Canoe Federation website.
