Results - Hauraki Coast to Coast Relay

Tikapa Moana greeted five Auckland and Tauranga based crews with crisp morning temperatures and choppy sea conditions for the first inaugural Hauraki Coast to Coast Waka Relay.

Locals from all over Hauraki gathered to greet and welcome the crews, as they made their way from the Coast of Kaiaua in Waihihi to the Coast of Thames in Te Puru. The Haukainga from Ngati Whanaunga welcomed and opened the race in Kaiaua and Ngati Tamatera and Ngati Maru Kaikaranga called the crews in as they reached the shores of Te Puru, where 200 locals were waiting and eagerly watching the change overs and turn around.

Conditions were challenging for paddlers completing the first leg as they were faced with side winds and short sharp chop that increased not just resistance but also the likelihood of ama lift. Paddlers completing the second leg made the most of the awesome midday conditions powering through smooth, tropical like conditions on the way back.

Two crews from Manukau Outrigger Canoe Club choose to iron the 38km return distance as training ground for the long distance nationals. While, Te Paerangi, Taniwha Outrigger Canoe and Tauranga Outrigger Canoe relayed across the Firth completing an 19km leg to each end.

Extra special acknowledgement must go to the Wahine Toa of the race – Manu Wahine (Manukau Outrigger Canoe) and TP Wahine (Te Paerangi Waka Ama Inc) who amazed everyone when they took on an extra 2km with determination and gusto. Manu Wahine was one of the crews that ironed the race and in this instance completed a 40km course in good time – Ka Rawe!

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank the crews who came in support of this race. Our Hauraki Whanau had an awesome day and we’ve had some awesome feedback from all the participants. Thanks to the support of the crews and Waka Ama New Zealand, lots of interest has been generated, clubs who have been dormant are now awakened and many of our whanau have now been inspired to become part of the greater Aotearoa Waka Ama Whanau.

Plans are already being made to make the race a great event and next year will see some of our Whanau out there racing across the Firth with you.
