Name: Matt Finnigan (Finny)
Waka Ama Club: Tauranga Moana
I complete the 8 day Discovery Course.
What did you find most challenging at Outward Bound?
There were many challenges throughout the 8 days. One big challenge was learning to wait for meals. I am used to going to the fridge and getting a snack whenever. I had to be self controlled. Sometimes I was ‘starving’ but I just had to toughen up.
What experience did you enjoy the most?
I absolutely loved kayaking down the Pelorous River. It was breath taking scenery and it was also a challenge, learning to maneouvre a kayak with spray skirt on. It was also cool having a lunch break, lighting a fire and having a korero. We also set up a river side sauna, using a fabric sheet, hot river stones and a squirt of water. It was chilled out and challenging at the same time.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about doing a course?
If you are thinking of doing Outward Bound, just go for it. I don’t think you will be the same once you have completed it. You get to know your group really well in just a short period of time. You will make new friends, try new experiences and have important time to think and talk about life.
What are some tips you would give to people who are going on a course?
Get a good level of fitness before you go, so that you will enjoy the whole experience.
What are some values that Outward Bound School taught you?
That I may think I have done really well at something, but actually I am capable of pushing myself a lot more.
That I can be myself and people will appreciate me for who I am.
That sometimes I just need to toughen up
Would you recommend Outward Bound to fellow paddlers?
Absolutely! It was 8 days of full on adventure.
Is there any one you would like to thank that supported you during your Outward Bound experience?
I want to thank Waka Ama for this scholarship. I want to thank Pahoia School Board of Trustees for granting me leave. Mostly I want to thank Suzie for supporting me to go on this adventure.
