What course did you complete at Outward Bound? How long were you at Outward Bound for?

Leaps & Bounds 594. 8 days.

What did you find most challenging at Outward Bound?

My physical challenge was swimming in the freezing cold water, and pushing myself to beat dad in Physical Training each morning. Mentally, being able to cooperate with many different personalities that are very different to mine.

What experience did you enjoy the most?

2 nights out by myself in the bush, high ropes and meeting new people and being able to getting to know them.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about doing a course?

Go for it! It’s so much fun, you’ll never ever be bored. It is so amazing.

What are some tips you would give to people who are going on a course?

Do everything you can, expect the un-expected, enjoy every moment and definitely give everything a go.

What are some values that Outward Bound School taught you?

Never say “I can’t”, don’t doubt yourself, be responsible. Set goals for yourself, be the best you can be.

Would you recommend Outward Bound to other paddlers?

Definitely.

What course did you complete at Outward Bound? How long were you at Outward Bound for?

Leaps and Bounds #594, we were there 8 days.

 What did you find most challenging at Outward Bound?

The first night, with our first cold swim, sleeping out, and having the teenagers cook the dinner. Then you realised that things were going to be a bit different.

What experience did you enjoy the most?

Watching our groups teenagers attempt and complete activities that really pushed them, seeing their confidence grow.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about doing a course?

Just go for it, get there, summer may be better thou. It may be hard at times, but it is fun and rewarding.

What are some tips you would give to people who are going on a course?

Have a reasonable amount of fitness before you go. Be organised with your gear that you take down. Go with an open mind and have good time.

What are some values that Outward Bound School taught you?

There is a strong emphasis on safeguarding and helping the Environment. Also having patience and humour with others.

Would you recommend Outward Bound to other paddlers?

Yep, for sure. Especially if you get to go with 1 of your teenage children

RA McKenzie Trust, for helping fund Kelena’s and my trip there.

Waka Ama NZ; for providing the opportunity to go.

Mitamitaga Canoe Club, Kamo Intermediate School, Whangarei Girls High School, and Whangarei Heads Surf Lifesaving Club, for their support and encouragement for Kelena.

And 2 great guys- Chris and Glenn; the Outward Bound guys, who helped us through a great time.

The whole Outward Bound Organisation has been very helpful, and great to deal with.
